When the storm destroyed the old lighthouse, the coastal village expected the government to replace it. Months passed, however, and the harbour remained dangerously dark. Most fishing boats began returning before sunset, cutting short the trips on which dozens of families depended.
A university student named Iris came home for the summer and found a sealed letter among her grandfather's papers. It contained no signature, only a rough drawing of the lighthouse and a sentence: 'The brightest signal is not always the tallest.'
At first, Iris assumed the note referred to some forgotten electrical design. She searched the local archives and interviewed retired sailors. Their stories pointed to a different explanation: during a storm many years earlier, villagers had built a chain of small fires along the cliffs when the lighthouse lamp failed.
The fires had worked because each was visible from the next. A single failure could not leave the entire coastline in darkness. Iris presented the account to the harbour committee, suggesting a modern network of modest solar-powered beacons rather than waiting indefinitely for one expensive tower.
Not everyone agreed. Some residents feared that abandoning the old lighthouse meant abandoning the village's identity. Iris argued that the tower had always stood for bringing people safely home, not for the stones from which it was built.
By autumn, the first beacons were operating. On the evening of their opening, Iris found another note tucked into the letter's envelope, written in her grandfather's handwriting: 'If you are reading this, you have already learned where to look for the light.'
