For years, Nora walked past a narrow bookshop on her way home. Its windows were always dark and its door was always locked. Above the door hung a sign: 'Open when you need a story most.' Nora assumed the shop had closed long ago.
One night, after a difficult exam and an argument with her best friend, she noticed warm light inside. The clock on the town hall had just struck midnight. Nora pushed the door. It opened without a sound.
Thousands of books climbed the walls. A tiny bell rang, and a woman with silver glasses appeared behind the counter. 'What kind of story are you looking for?' she asked. Nora admitted that she did not know.
The woman handed her a book with a blank cover. On the first page Nora read about a girl who was afraid to apologize. The girl waited so long that her friend began to believe she no longer cared. The rest of the pages were empty.
'Where is the ending?' Nora asked. The woman smiled. 'That depends on what the girl does tomorrow.'
When Nora looked up, the shop was gone. She was standing outside in the quiet street, still holding the book. The next morning, she called her friend. As soon as they began talking, words appeared on the second page.
